I know numerous RNs and Nurse Practitioners who looooove their work. The demand for fully qualified nurses, with their bachelors of science or masters is huge. They have many job options, scheduling flexibility, job portability, and the pay is great. I know several doctors too. They claim they love their jobs, but they don't glow with satisfaction like the nurses I know. I agree with Elsewhere. Why be an assistant when you can be the real deal. Myself? I got a bachelors in Music and immediately went on to graduate school in education. I teach high school math (not music). Now, more than 15 years later, I have returned to school and will finish my law degree (juris doctorate) in April. They say most people change careers three times in their lives. Don't feel that if you pick something now, it's forever. It could be for five or ten years and you change your mind. There's lots to do out here, a choice now doesn't close off other options. HELP! I STILL HAVEN'T PICKED A MAJOR!
by stillAwitness ini am about to enter my second semester in college and sure i know: i've got time to decide what i want to do as far as a major goes, but my school is converting into a brand new college by fall of 06 and they are urging those who are there now to hurry up and finish asap since transfering credits and such will soon get tricky once the new college is established.
my counselor says not to worry.

Bullying/Harrasement-Please advise
by doodle-v inour child goes to an after school child care provide by the local y. it's right at her elementary school, so after class she just goes there to another class room with the other kids and they play games, do homework etc, till we pick her up after work.
she's gone there for two years and liked it.
she has lots of friends at school and gets along with just about everyone.

I was going to say the same thing, about it being an extension of the school.
But do your homework first, before going to the school authorities. At one point you probably filled out paperwork that included the behavior policy and consequences for children who violated these policies. If there were none, well, then, the Y and the school district are grossly negligent. But I bet there are some. Point out to the Y administration how the local site is failing to observe its own policies.
(If children are a danger to others in an optional program, then just imaging what it might be like out on the playground during the compulsory education part of the day...)
And don't go to the principal. The principal probably has no authority over the staff of the program within this context. This is run by the Y, the Y probably pays for the facility. However, the school district probably has a liaison person (assistant superintendent) coordinating these programs between the Y and the school sites. Don't waste time on a principal who sees her job as being hostess with the mostest (my experience with dozens of elementary-type principals).
While I never condone bullying behavior of any kind on my watch in my high school classroom and surrounding environment, I can't be evertwhere. There are two pieces of the picture here. Some kids get picked on. I can smell them from across campus. I call them "Bully Bait." Some do obvious things, with others it's very subtle. Get your girl in martial arts. A dignity of character shows up very quickly in these kids. The subtle change makes all the difference.
Protect your baby, but realize that this is not an isolated problem-it will could show up elsewhere.
Love on that baby-girl.

Trouble For Richie
by RichieRich inas many of you know, i have a myspace.com account.. apparently, while i was out last night, someone called my mother and informed her of my activities on myspace.
my mother called and asked me for my login info, and was shocked to see me, and around 40 witnesses in my area having active profiles.
contents of these profile ranged from a few pictures to downright self-incrimination.

Tuned in for my morning cup of Trouble for Richie, and noted what jgnat said.
I want to add, that the elders have probably sensed what your future holds (if they have not downright predicted it amongst themselves). If that is the case, your mother is soon to be a sole "sister" with an unbelieving mate, and is of no use to them.
They won't waste time trying to get you if they know they have lost, and they won't help her because she has nothing left to offer them. I saw this happen to my mom (my dad is not a JW) when my two brothers did their respective straying.
Your mom got the brush off and perhaps she realized that all she really has is you and your dad. For my mom, she still jumps through hoops trying to maintain imaginary status in her congregation (everyone uses her kind heart and generous spirit).
Try not to abandoned your mom if it can be avoided. Now study hard.

I think I just got the total experience
by La Capra ini tried to go to walmart this morning.. this story's origin began last april, when, just days before my final exams, my gateway laptop went nuts.
as a third year law student, having taken her exams for the the entire duration on computer, the notion of changing my exam approach to bluebook was out of the question.. i was able to obtain, for the short term, another laptop and survived third year just fine.. however, it took three rounds of repairs to get my computer back in working order for more than three weeks (gateway kept replacing the hard drive, but it was the motherboard that was failing-good news was that they only charged me for one disk drive, and not for the mother board eventually installed.).
and i am not the kind of person that feels comfortable with the "what ifs" so when about a few days ago, my gateway laptop went to a screen that i only saw before each of the three prior "deaths," i decided that my peace of mind was worth many hundreds of dollars and decided to get a "backup" laptop, considering i have two more rounds of exams and the bar exam through which i need a reliable computer.. i tried to order the sub-500 dell, but it wouldn't arrive in time for december's exams, so i started looking at the other offers out and about.. that meant i actually had to go to a brick and mortar establishment so i would have a computer in hand, rather than in some shipping queue.. i am not much of a consumer.

I was right at the counter of the kiosk. The clerk handed me one, and I handed it to the woman behind me, (the one that Fat Man had pushed me past) saying, "I got pushed passed her," to the clerk. So the clerk handed me another one and said "thank you." I DID NOT hand that one to Fat Man. (Should I have thanked him? Now I'll obsess (not).)

Anewme,
I don't write more because I do nothing other than work (I'm a full time teacher and part time law clerk in a criminal defense law office) or study, so I have nothing interesting about which to write. I am in Santa Rosa (not a secret, I've posted this before).

I tried to go to Walmart this morning.
This story's origin began last April, when, just days before my final exams, my Gateway laptop went nuts. As a third year law student, having taken her exams for the the entire duration on computer, the notion of changing my exam approach to bluebook was out of the question.
I was able to obtain, for the short term, another laptop and survived third year just fine.
However, it took three rounds of repairs to get my computer back in working order for more than three weeks (Gateway kept replacing the hard drive, but it was the motherboard that was failing-good news was that they only charged me for one disk drive, and not for the mother board eventually installed.)
And I am not the kind of person that feels comfortable with the "what ifs" so when about a few days ago, my Gateway laptop went to a screen that I only saw before each of the three prior "deaths," I decided that my peace of mind was worth many hundreds of dollars and decided to get a "backup" laptop, considering I have two more rounds of exams and the bar exam through which I need a reliable computer.
I tried to order the sub-500 Dell, but it wouldn't arrive in time for December's exams, so I started looking at the other offers out and about.
That meant I actually had to go to a brick and mortar establishment so I would have a computer in hand, rather than in some shipping queue.
I am not much of a consumer. I don't spend time researching the best deal, finding all the coupons and gimicks and working the system. I detest the notion of rebates, but play the game only when the particular product is one I was planning to buy anyway.
But I checked the print ads this week and discovered several large retailers were offering sub-500 laptops that would serve my needs for exam-taking just fine. Except all involved being a door-buster on Black Friday. I never go shopping on Thanksgiving weekend, and never intended to, but apparently, this was the only way I would be getting a new laptop before exams without spending over a grand.
I hate Walmart, I hate giving them money, but as I was driving home from Thanksgiving last night at midnight, there were already people in front of Circuit City (their ad said the store had 15 sub500 laptops). I next drove by the Walmart a few miles from my house and only security guards were wandering about.
So, I opted for Walmart because I heard there was supposed to 100 of their sub500 laptops, there was no one there at 12:30, and it was closest to my house. And besides, I hadn't had a truly new experience in a loooooooooooong time (thanks law school), so I figured I'd see things I'd never seen before. I came back to Walmart at about 3:30 a.m. and the queue was about 20 people deep. Rain was pouring. Walmart was to open at 5 a.m.
I visited with a few groups of consumers and took in the vibe of people there to get dvds for a few bucks cheaper, an acrylic sweater for 9.89, certain toys or video games, etc. But most people waiting were there for the laptop, or a flat screen TV. It was then I realized I would not be very dissappointed if I missed out on my coveted cheap laptop.
At 4:30 a.m. there were a few hundred people behind me in line, and Walmart does nothing to protect the early arrivals' queue position, like giving out vouchers for the limited stock items. This was when approximately ten people walked straight to the entrance from the parking lot, rather than go to the end of the line. (gangbangers and their girlfriends with infants in arms)
People started yelling and cursing, but there was nothing physical and the gangbangers never moved. Having never experienced anything like this before, I was far more intrigued by this morass of humanity (?) than the possibility of getting a laptop on which Walmart would make negative profit.
Then there was one woman ahead of me that started yelling at me to go to the back of the line. I stayed away from her, but watched her get nuttier and nuttier as 5 a.m. approached. She reminded me of the people I see at the court house for "drug court." She had that alcoholic/meth-fiend look to her. I sincerely hoped she would get what she came for (unless, of course, she got the last laptop and I was still just behind her-yes, it's true, I was thinking this, mainly because she was yelling at me for no reason).
At 4:55 the doors open and we flooded in. I got to the laptops quickly, but instead of 100, there were only 25. Here's where Walmart screwed up. They put all the laptops at a single register stand alone kiosk that could be approached from 360 degrees. The management then required that all laptops be purchased at this kiosk. So, instead of grabbing a box and walking away from the kiosk, the cashier handed out a box, then stopped to ring the sale, while the would-be customers closed in and blocked in the people who had purchased their computers.
Within seconds, there were about 100 people surrounding the kiosk, between 5-10 people deep. Walmart staff tried to get us to form a line (hehehe), with which I would have complied, but it was pointless. A very large, overweight man pushed me to the front of the kiosk after only a few of the laptops had been distributed.
That was when the alcoholic/meth fiend woman (who was behind me by now) went down...to the floor, in an apparent seizure. Only two people were between us, but I could not see what was happening as people crouched over her, shouting "call 911," shouting questions and answers, and trying to get a comprehensible response from the woman on the floor.
While this was going on, people were trying to climb over her to get to the laptops, they were yelling about being in the line, and I finally was able to see the woman on the floor. She was not having a seizure in the grand mal/epileptic sense, she was having a tantrum, screaming and thrashing. I was certainly concerned for her well-being (and that of the people on the floor with her trying to help her), but also completely entranced by everyone's behavior. Walmart staff had very little luck keeping the area around the woman clear of people, because few seemed to care about her. They tried to step over her (I was close enough to put my hand up to their chest to stop them, but Walmart staff wouldn't even do that, probably corporate policy), they tried to wiggle around the staff, they were yelling at the staff and still pushing.
The reason? Because the Walmart staff inside the cashier's kiosk was STILL HANDING OUT THE LAPTOPS! So the throng kept pushing inward onto the kiosk (and past the woman on the floor) and those customers with laptops had nowhere to go, they were surrounded 360 degrees. A woman who admittedly was ahead of me at one point started yelling at me when the fat man behind me pushed me forward again.
I was thoroughly fascinated by all these displays of accumulation-obsession. I was trying to absorb everything about the experience (because I certainly was never going to do THIS again), and was particularly intrigued with those people who were uncomfortable with the idea of trying to get a laptop while this woman on the floor was having an "episode." But they were in dilemma-do they do the right thing and move away to give the woman room, if in doing so it means someone else would push into their place AND get rewarded for their rudeness and complete lack of character with a laptop too? (They all opted for the laptops.) It was absolutely extraordinary.
As people in the outer ranks, realizing there were only a few computers left, abandoned their efforts, the area opened up enough for me to make an exit from the chaos. I considered observing the deployment of the paramedics into the swarm from a distance, but soon all the computers were gone and everyone had moved on to the $130 20" flat screen TV/DVD, and I figured the paramedics would be pretty pissed if we were all still hovering, so I got myself out of there and drove myself home.
I'm a changed person. Has shopping the day after Thanksgiving always been like this, or did I get the extra-special unabridged version?
(And do we have any doubt that Walmart will be sending alcoholic/meth-fiend gift cards and a laptop and that alcoholic meth-fiend will speaking with a plaintiff's attorney before the end of business Monday....?)

I'm glad for the reduction in waste of natural resources.
I went ahead and read the whole thing. I haven't read anything from WTBTS, consciously, word for word, in about twenty years. I have read a few paragraphs here or there, but this was the first thing I read.
I think the overall "voice" of this article is much different from the WTBTS's voice of my childhood and teen years. There are still a few sentences, here and there, that smack of the feeling, "there is no way to acknowledge the content of this statement without implicitly agreeing with it," but there is much less of that tone.
Is this new voice typical of current WTBTS drivel, or is it unique to a few articles here and there?

Chewing Gum at KH
by stillajwexelder inthe elders frown upon chewing gum at the kingdom hall and we have had a locals needs part where it was mentioned.
is/was chewing gum at your hall a no-no?
-
La Capra
My mom ALWAYS chews gum at meetings. And ALWAYS at assemblies, too. My mom really can't survive her existence without moving her mouth (and since she can't talk all the way through meetings and assemblies, chew gum she must...)
I myself left in 1987, so maybe the gum rules weren't so heavily enforced in my area, then. But, I know if I were told to remove my gum, the following would have happened. First, I would spit it out in the annoying enforcer's face, and secondly I would promptly replace it with twice as much gum as was previously in my mouth. Third, I would ask the annoying enforcer if he would like some more...
Faithful in a little...what a load of hooey.

What was up with this? They don't believe in immortality of the soul (except for 144K+1). This one doesn't make sense to me. I suppose at the time (nearly 18 years ago) it could have made sense when I actually could explain some of the more convoluted doctrine. But I'm at a loss now. Blondie? Anyone?
But John, this is one that will trip through my mind too, more than many of the others, in fact.
